Good morning all,
I hope you find this post somewhat enlighten and maybe helpful.
I want to talk about how we speak to people. Recently, in my personal life, my books have been brought into question. The fact that I write Erotic Romances didn’t escape their notice, and not in a “Ooo, I wanna read them” type of response.
My poor husband was cornered and asked if HE knew what I actually did during the day. (Umm, Duh, he sure does because he helped with ideas.) Then once he responded, it was TOLD to him that because of what I write, that HE would get in trouble with his work, and HE wouldn’t be able to get a teaching job, nor would I. Also how does HIS church feel about what I write. (see where I am going there? It’s all about him.) My husband, being the smart and caring man that he is, started he didn’t care and was proud of me. Also let him know that our church in fact does know, and hell a lot of people do and don’t have an issue.
So it was dropped and never mentioned again, for which I was glad. I mean its our business what we do, especially when the people in question do not speak with us on a regular bases and constantly judge what we do in everything.
THEN… (Yup there’s more), it was just told to us that more was head to the head of our giant family, and oldest member of our clan, the grandma. When yet again they asked if she knew, she replied with a yes, she knew since my very first book under a different pen, and supported me. She even stated that I care for my five children at home, make sure their homework is done, food is always on the table, and they are healthy and happy. I do all this and still bring in pocket change in for those fun things for them. So why not. But these individuals proceeded to respond with hatefulness to the genre, stating it was just as bad as being Gay. (Sorry to say, there is nothing wrong with this. We have a family member who is gay, and one of my dear friends is also gay. Doesn’t bother me, in fact, it’s hot when two hot men kiss. But this is me.)
That didn’t hurt, the following comments stung like a bitch. The fact that the people who read have mental issues and will probably go out and RAPE people. (YES YOU READ THAT CORRECT… RAPE). I have a huge issue with this. Not because of the issues going on all over Facebook with the sicko who didn’t get the time behind bars he deserves, but because I was a victim of rape.
I didn’t read those book then, I didn’t do anything wrong, I didn’t wear the wrong clothes, I didn’t come from the bad side of town. But I was drunk, and well let’s just say it will be another post later about this issues as I too was told I was the one who needed to be punished and those who committed the act on me... we the victims.
But back to my thought about what was said. Those people… ummm, how do we classify those people. Oh, you mean people who like to read? Then, god love my mom, helped me laugh about it. Even joked that she was in serious trouble because she had been reading “those” books since they first came out. I told her they didn’t have wall carving of people getting it on back then with the Dinasours. A good laugh was had, and I determined I must be the damn Cult leader if I write “those” books. Damn go me! I’m moving up in the world.
But in all seriousness, it bothered me that so many still are so narrow minded as to rope people into one section on how things need to be. We can like this, if we do that. We can’t act this way, if we go there, and so on. We need to be more open minded and watch what we say to people.
Sure, people have the right to their opinion, but when do we say, okay you have crossed a line. This person didn’t know of my past, but then again, he didn’t take the time to find out why it bothered me so.
So I beg all of you to think before you speak about things you are unsure about. Ask questions, and maybe be open to everything that is out there. Life is to damn short to be pissed off and narrow minded. Hell, my dad even told me when I was younger… “Listen without defending and Speak without Offending.” I still do that, and it has been something I teach my children.
Now that ya’ll have read my first blog post in however many months, I gotta ask…
